Korean Kids Banned From Late Night Gaming... pwned

So apparently there's a law in Korea which prohibits kids under the age of 16 from playing games between midnight and 6am.

IMO: Although it sounds ridiculous at first, I honestly don't think its the worst thing in the world. Kind of extreme they created a law to ban it nationally, but I remember when I was in high school and WoW just came out. I played that shit 24/7 and probably suffered due to it more than I benefited.

Since my parents had no idea wtf online games were, I went unchecked and I'd easily say I played way too much video games as a kid.

What are your thoughts peeps?

Note: Article is actually about it not working, as the kids are finding ways around the law anyways. Nevertheless, thought I'd post. I had no idea it existed.

I heard about this a while ago. It might sound pretty stupid to us, but I'm sure that it makes sense in the korean culture.

the main controversy with this law isnt that high school kids shouldnt be playing games past 12am. Few would argue against the fact that kids gaming until 2am is detrimental to their school lives. The main problem with this "ban" is the fact that government is preventing people from doing something that doesnt affect the governent itself. This ban is a precedent for what may come in the future for internet freedom and privacy (at least for Korea).

In Korea, as you register a game, you have to link it to your real life identity so the government can moniter if you're following their rules. In doing so you render yourself no longer annonymous.

The ban is drawn with good intentions but government intervention is NOT necessary. Parents need to be encouraged to moniter their childrens' computer time closer

The connection to your ID is a bit scary, but I'd argue that WoW has the potential to harm a persons life equal to if not more than Alcohol. Our government moderates our purchasing ability by age with alcohol, so why not online games?

And let's be serious, parents are stupid and many of them crap, especially when it comes to computers. I donno, I'm somewhat pro on this law lol Slippery slope or not.

just control yourself. i know computer games are addictive....i am an addict not going to lie. but when it all comes down to it i know that life in general is more important than video games.

but kids staying up late at night...well whats the difference then staying up late watching a movie or at party..

i dont like this law at all. make your own choices.

I don't honestly think i child under 16 needs to play video games past midnight. Although that is hypocritical because i often stay up laddering later than 12. In the end it is better for society, but since when do kids care about whats better for society?

Regardless of whether or not playing video games past midnight is "detrimental to their school lives," the government really shouldn't have a say in this. I guess it is for the best though.
